Perfect weather of 23 degrees Celsius, clear blue skies and a calm Atlantic Ocean greeted triathletes at the start line of ELEVEN Cape Town 2013. First sent on their way by Councilor Antonio Van Der Rheede were the men in the Olympic distance followed by the females 2 minutes later. The sprint and super sprint fields were sent off a further 10 and 15 minutes respectively.

With a combined total of 250 triathletes including 30 international visitors, the South Africans had to fight hard to grab top honors. In the Olympic distance the ELEVEN Cape Town title went to defending champion Mark Threlfall (GBR), however Kelly Van Der Toorn (RSA) brought home the title on the ladies side.

Following the ELEVEN triathlons the 2013 Cape Town Sprint Triathlon African Cup got under away. South Africa had a strong presence with current top male and female triathletes Richard Murray and Kate Roberts competing, however they were up against talented youngsters from the Netherlands and Austria. 

The South African’s however did not disappoint as they swept the podium in the men’s race, with Richard Murray claiming gold. Wian Sullwald, who won the 2012 ITU World Championship junior title in Auckland, earned silver and Henri Schoeman took bronze.

Rising Dutch star Rachel Klamer started her season out in style grabbing the gold with South Africa’s Kate Roberts and Carlyn Fischer taking silver and bronze, respectively.
